Fairy tales are more than true: not because they tell us that dragons exist, but because they tell us that dragons can be beaten. – G.K. Chesterton
I can not take credit for naming any of these concepts; they exist throughout history in many cultures and stories, throughout Jungian Psychology and notably within the text of Carol Pearson’s book Awakening The Heroes Within. I have experienced many of these principles embodied and personified throughout my own journey-but as with everything, dear heart, this is your journey. If something makes sense or resonates with you – use it. If it doesn’t - throw it out. There is a comfort I experienced when embracing some of these ideas, they allowed me to reflect and understand some of my process without constantly reliving my specific trauma. It gave me objectivity, as if I were reviewing my life through the safety of a lens belonging to a third person.
I broke these concepts into multiple postings for you – you decide how much or how little to read. These are simply ideas that I encountered and found helpful on my own journey – at the very least; I hope it will encourage you to seek connection with and perspective from other survivors. I’m sorry to tell you, but there is no “one size fits all” solution to healing from trauma; However, the active process of crafting your own journey is a crucial step to regaining a sense of control and feeling empowered.
In the very early days – I was a great proponent and loud mouth about renaming our classification from “Victim” to “Survivor.” That was energy well spent. Never forget, you are a Survivor – you are still here! You have an incredible strength that most people will never know. Your capacity and potential are endless, and your very breath is proof to the universe that you will not be beaten by this.
Remember that a hero can be an ordinary individual that finds the strength to persevere in spite of overwhelming obstacles.
I have faith in you – you can do anything you set your heart to.
In solidarity,
-Adam
